AEO experience in SEO jobs usually means you have worked to get a brand cited or accurately described in AI answers, and you can show how you measured the result. Employers set the bar differently. One current posting asks for a specific citation you earned and exactly how you earned it. Another accepts curiosity and a willingness to learn. Read the exact requirement before deciding whether your search experience qualifies.
Last verified October 13, 2026. This guide compares three selected U.S.-remote SEO job descriptions, not a hiring survey. All three postings were listed on this date. Juniper Square's posting states an October 5, 2026 application deadline, so confirm it is still reviewing applications. The evidence worksheet and screening questions are our editorial suggestions, not employer requirements. AI platforms change often, so recheck the cited platform guidance before relying on it.
What does AEO experience mean in SEO jobs?
AEO usually stands for answer engine optimization and GEO for generative engine optimization. Nebius's posting also uses AIO, and Superhuman calls its program "Search Everywhere Optimization." The responsibilities around the label matter more than the label.
Across the three descriptions below, AEO work falls into four groups:
- Measurement. Tracking whether and how AI answers mention, cite or describe the brand, often against named competitors.
- Content structure. Making pages clear enough for search systems and AI tools to extract, summarize and attribute.
- Authority beyond the website. Earning mentions, links and citations on third-party sources such as media, review sites, video and community content.
- Technical access. Making sure the relevant crawlers can reach and read the content.
None of this replaces SEO. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional requirements to appear in them (Google Search Central). All three employers also require a strong SEO foundation.
How do current SEO job descriptions define AEO experience?
Pay figures are each employer's stated range for this role, not an SEO salary benchmark.
SEO & AEO Manager at Juniper Square
- AEO requirement: "Real, hands-on AEO/GEO experience, not just familiarity with the concept." Candidates should be able to point to a specific citation they earned in an AI answer engine and explain exactly how.
- How success is measured: Juniper Square being cited by name in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews, tracked against named competitors and reported alongside organic traffic and rankings. The role also runs controlled citation experiments.
- Experience and tools: five or more years in SEO, including ownership of a technical SEO program at a large B2B organization, plus AI-citation monitoring tools such as Profound or AirOps.
- Pay and location: $116,000 to $160,000 U.S. base salary. USA remote; the posting does not list eligible states. Juniper Square posting
Senior Manager, SEO & GEO at Nebius
- AEO requirement: "Practical experience with GEO, AEO, AI-search visibility, or content programs designed to earn citations and recommendations" in tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
- How success is measured: one measurement framework covering organic visibility, conversions, pipeline influence, share of voice and AI citations, with a baseline and a prioritized SEO and GEO roadmap in place within the first 90 days.
- Experience and tools: eight or more years in SEO, organic growth or a closely related discipline, including building or transforming an SEO program at scale.
- Pay and location: $150,000 to $187,500 base. Remote in the United States. Nebius posting
SEO & AEO Manager at Superhuman
- AEO requirement: curiosity about AI-driven search and eagerness "to develop practical AEO expertise." Familiarity with AI-search tracking tools such as Profound is listed as nice to have.
- How success is measured: contribution to team KPIs that include AI search presence, plus helping build a practical way to measure citations, brand mentions, sentiment and business impact in AI search.
- Experience and tools: four or more years of hands-on SEO. This is an individual contributor role reporting to the Group Manager of SEO & AEO.
- Pay and location: Zone 1 $143K to $170K and Zone 2 $129K to $153K. Remote in the United States, with travel expected for scheduled team collaboration weeks. Superhuman posting
Our reading is that these postings run from proof required to learning accepted. Juniper Square wants a documented citation result. Nebius wants practical experience plus the senior judgment to build a measurement system. Superhuman treats AEO as a skill a strong SEO can grow into. Three postings cannot show how common each approach is, but they do show that "AEO" in a title does not tell you which bar applies.
Where employer tasks and platform guidance differ
Some AEO tasks in job descriptions go beyond what the platforms document as necessary. Strong candidates can separate documented requirements from experiments.
- AI-specific files. Juniper Square's role manages "emerging AI crawling protocols, including llms.txt" and plain-text or Markdown versions of priority pages. Google says site owners do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in its AI features (Google Search Central). That statement covers Google Search only, so an employer may still test these files elsewhere. Present that work as testing, not a known ranking factor.
- Crawler access. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links (OpenAI). Checking robots.txt and bot-blocking rules is a concrete, documented task.
- Measurement. Google says AI Overview and AI Mode appearances are included in overall Search Console traffic under the Web search type. If you claim an AI Overview traffic gain, be ready to explain how you separated it from other search traffic.
- Variability. Google says AI Overviews often do not trigger, and that AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and show different links. One screenshot of a citation shows one answer, not a lasting position.
How to prove AEO experience without overstating it
Juniper Square's request for a specific citation, and how you earned it, is a useful test even for roles that ask less. Prepare one or two examples with six fields:
- Questions tracked. The prompts or queries you monitored, and why they mattered to the business.
- Platforms and dates. Which AI tools you checked, how often, and over what period.
- Baseline. What the answers said, and which sources they cited, before your work.
- Your change. The page, research, authority or technical work you personally did.
- Result. Changes in citations, mentions or answer accuracy after the work.
- Limits. Other changes in the same period, sample size, and what you cannot attribute.
Here is illustrative resume wording, not drawn from any employer or candidate: "Tracked 30 buyer questions in three AI tools weekly for eight weeks. Our product was cited in 4 answers at baseline and 11 after we published an original benchmark and earned coverage on two industry sites. A product launch fell in the same period, so the result is directional."
Lead your remote marketing resume with your strongest example, and practice explaining it with the remote marketing interview guide. If an employer requests an AEO audit during hiring, use the take-home assignment checks to scope it.
If you have no AEO results yet, say so. Describe related foundations, such as structured data or digital PR, and any monitoring you have started. That fits roles like Superhuman's, which treats AEO as a skill to develop.
Questions to ask before applying
- Which AI platforms and questions does the team track today, and with what tool?
- Is AI visibility a measured goal with a target, or an exploratory part of the role?
- Who owns the content, web and PR work that AEO results depend on?
- How does the team separate AI-driven results from normal search changes?
For Juniper Square, also confirm that your state is eligible. The location restrictions guide explains how to ask. Current verified openings, including these three roles while they remain open, are on the remote SEO jobs board.
Frequently asked questions
What does AEO experience mean in an SEO job?
It usually means work to get a brand cited or accurately described in AI answers, plus a way to measure the result. In three U.S.-remote SEO postings checked October 13, 2026, that included tracking citations against competitors, structuring content for extraction, earning third-party mentions and managing crawler access.
Do all SEO jobs require AEO experience?
No. Of three U.S.-remote SEO postings checked October 13, 2026, Juniper Square required hands-on AEO or GEO experience with a specific earned citation, Nebius asked for practical GEO or AEO experience, and Superhuman asked for curiosity and eagerness to develop AEO expertise.
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional requirements to appear in them. Employers add AI-specific measurement, citation building and testing on top of an SEO foundation.
How do I prove AEO experience in an interview?
Bring one documented example covering the questions you tracked, the AI platforms and dates, the baseline, the work you personally did, the result, and what else changed in that period. Juniper Square's posting asks candidates to explain exactly how they earned a specific AI citation.
